Insta360 X5 vs DJI Osmo 360 Specifications Comparison

In terms of key specifications, the DJI Osmo 360 and Insta360 X5 are already market-leading 360-degree cameras, each with their own unique features.

With a 1-inch sensor, 10 Bit D-Log M color, and built-in storage, the Osmo 360 is ideal for professional creators who value night photography performance and post-production flexibility. In contrast, the Insta360 X5 is suitable for content creators looking for ease-of-use, with its interchangeable lens design, 15-meter waterproof capability, and support for creative features such as AI editing and InstaFrame.

Even though the DJI Osmo 360 is superior to the Insta360 X5 in terms of sensor size, acoustics, etc., the Insta360 X5 still has a winning edge over the DJI Osmo 360 in my personal opinion.

There are two reasons for this:One is the Insta360's rich accessory ecologyThe DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is currently available with 43 accessories. Currently, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro offers 43 accessories, some of which are compatible with the DJI Osmo 360, and only 30 to 40 of which can actually be used on the DJI Osmo 360. The Insta360 X5, on the other hand, has 97 accessories that cover a wide range of sports and creative needs. For example, when riding a motorcycle, you'll need to use theGPS Preview Remote with Built-In MicDiving photography is highly dependent onInvisible Diving CaseThe X5 has the advantage in terms of the abundance of accessories and application scenarios. In terms of the abundance of accessories and application scenarios, X5 has an advantage.

The second is the quality and ease of use of the movie. In addition to 8K recording, the quality of the video depends on whether the daytime or nighttime shooting is clear or not, whether the picture is smooth or not, whether the color is accurate or not, in short, whether the recorded video looks good or not. Some of the specifications are beautifully written, but the real-world results don't always keep up, such as oversharpening, screen flickering, and fogging.

Next I will analyze the differences and features of these two panoramic cameras in depth.

DJI Osmo 360 vs Insta360 X5

The X5 is longer vertically, while the Osmo360 is closer to a square.

The X5's battery is integrated into the lid, while the Osmo 360 has a separate battery.

Osmo Action is battery compatible with Osmo 360.

One of the advantages of the Osmo360 is that in addition to supporting SD memory cards, it also has a built-in 128GB (about 105GB actually available) of high-capacity memory, so you can keep shooting without interruption even if you run out of memory card capacity or forget to insert it.

The lenses on both cameras are both convex lenses.

The X5 supports interchangeable lenses, which is an innovative feature considering the scratch-prone nature of 360° camera lenses.

The thicknesses are all about the same.

Including the SD card, the X5 weighs 200.1g, while the Osmo360 weighs 184.1g, a difference of exactly 16g.

The lightweight and compact design of the Osmo360 is a clear advantage for helmet users, especially when wearing the helmet, as it takes up less space and improves comfort.

On the other hand, the average user finds The vertical design of X5 is more ergonomic. The Osmo360 is more convenient to operate. In comparison, the Osmo360 is wider in shape and more convenient to operate.Easy to touch the lens when holding with one hand. The use of the system is not as convenient as it should be.

X5 is as thin as a smartphone, and its slim design makes it easy for women to use with one hand.

Both X5 and Osmo 360 support magnetic quick release mounts

Looking at the design from the outside, I have the following impressions

  • Osmo360 Suitable for helmets and professional sports photography
  • X5 More comfort and convenience in daily use

DJI Osmo 360 vs Insta360 X5 [Picture Quality Comparison

Picture Quality Comparison

Regarding the quality, frankly speaking, everyone prefers different styles, so it's mostly a matter of personal preference. Let's take a look at the differences between the two: This video was shot at 2pm on a hot, sunny day in August. Both cameras were shot in the default 8K mode, with white balance and saturation unadjusted; the X5 has a bright blue color tone, while the Osmo360 has a warmer tone.

The sun shines brightly during the day, soThe sky's colors are closer to the vivid blues of the X5.

In terms of detail resolution, while both are 8K, the X5 retains texture better, making the clouds look more three-dimensional.

but Osmo360 has HDR turned on by default. The color information of the distant scene is also preserved.

I think the Osmo360 has more color detail, and you can clearly feel the HDR is on when taking selfies. x5 often has white halos around the sun, but the Osmo360 is less affected by the sun. In addition, the Osmo360 doesn't darken the face even when it's backlit. Although the performance of the two panoramic cameras is similar when backlit, the Osmo360's images are clearly brighter.

The contrast of the X5 is sharp and the image feels more like a "camera" shot, while the Osmo360 has a softer contrast and looks like a comfortable "portrait" shot.

When you take a selfie under strong backlighting, the Osmo360 performs really well, with the sky color not changing much, whether it's in good light or backlighting, thanks to the auto-opening HDR.

But be warned, with HDR on, there's a bit of noise in the shadows, and facial details are more visible - for example, the right side of my face looks a bit rough in the shot, which is a common shortcoming of HDR when it comes to brightening up the darks - and the X5 manages to achieve a higher resolution in 8K mode, probably because it doesn't have HDR turned on.

Since the X5 has to go down to 5.7K to turn on HDR, we'll be comparing this next.

HDR Comparison

Personally, I prefer 5.7K HDR to 8K on the X5, so I almost always use 5.7K mode. With HDR on, the X5's image style is pretty much the same as the Osmo360, except the white balance is slightly different, and the whitening near the sun is much reduced. It also effectively eliminates dark circles on the face when taking selfies. Neither camera is perfect in backlighting, but they're both pretty good for selfies.

When set to 5.7K HDR, X5 is easy to use for selfies.

Will the picture quality deteriorate if the resolution is lowered to 5.7K?

I don't mind too much. Practically speaking.Even at 5.7K, the X5 still does an excellent job of rendering cloud textures and details of grass and fields.Although Osmo360 also uses HDR, the lower contrast ratio gives the image a softer HDR look. Zooming in, the Osmo360's 8K mode does make the details of distant buildings more visible, but that may also be partly due to its lower contrast ratio, which makes the details easier to see.

The X5 has excellent contrast and stereo, which makes it a great choice for landscape selfies. However, if selfies are your main focus, the Osmo 360 is a good choice for portrait-like colors. Outdoor enthusiasts don't need to take as many selfies, so I prefer the X5.

For landscape and selfies, I recommend the X5; for portraits, the Osmo360 is more suitable.

When it comes to color tones, X5's color sensation is closer to the real thing. Like the color of asphalt, the X5's color and resolution are closer to the real eye. Also, when taking photos with HDR on, the X5 is better able to suppress the overexposure of the sun, like this photo I took at 5pm, the X5 has better control over backlighting and overexposure. The X5 has less overexposure of the sun.

The X5's adaptive color palette quickly adjusts to areas with large differences between dark and light for a more natural look. There's very little overlap of color, and the sky and ground hardly have a weird purple hue. When I quickly stepped out into the sunlight, the light was captured efficiently and consistently.

However, the adaptive color tones seem to increase the amount of heat generated by the camera, so it is not suitable for long (more than 1 hour) continuous shooting. Below is a comparison video of HDR performance~.

DJI Osmo 360 vs Insta360 X5 [Night Shot Comparison].

Performance differences are more pronounced in nighttime image quality, so understanding the low-light performance of each product can help you determine which color rendering is more appropriate.

In terms of night photography, the X5 performs better. The dark areas remain as deep as they should be, unaffected by external light, and details in the bright areas are preserved. When you zoom in, you'll see that the Osmo 360 is overexposed, while the X5 retains its color information and resolution.

The color of the letter "GENKY" is also reproduced in separate shades of blue, green and orange, but on Osmo360, the orange affects the blue and green.

The Insta360 delivers excellent color reproduction and light suppression in dark environments, and the wide-angle lens also delivers excellent image quality.

Advantages of the Insta360 X5

Easy-to-use vertical shapes

X5 is 16 grams heavier than Osmo, but it has a vertical design for a smoother grip. This makes one-handed operation easier and less likely to slip. To me, this ease of use is more important than being a few grams lighter, and it makes the overall feel of the device more comfortable.

Sliding Touch

The Osmo is quicker to launch, but the X5's sliding operation feels smoother. Both are the most comfortable sports cameras on the market, and simplicity is their common strength.

HDR Color Processing

While the Osmo360 does have a higher specification, I feel that the actual image quality of the X5 is superior. In particular, the X5 gives you the freedom to switch between high performance HDR and 8K quality, while the Osmo360 supports HDR at 8K, but it feels like it falls a bit short of the X5's HDR and 8K performance.

Image Quality for Landscape Photography

I think Osmo360 is more suitable for selfies, while X5 is more suitable for landscapes. For me, the 360° camera is mainly for capturing landscapes and people, not for taking selfies. Considering these scenes, the right resolution and contrast will really bring out the beauty and depth of the images.

Apps

Although the specs of the X5 are not as good as the Osmo360, I think its easy-to-use APP software makes it easy for even a beginner to get started with a panoramic camera, which is exactly the kind of feature that only a brand that has been in the 360° camera business for a long time can achieve.

night shot

It's no surprise that the X5's night mode is quite good. However, Insta360's handling of color and light in low-light conditions has always been better than DJI's. Even before the X5 was launched, Insta360 optimized its low-light shooting with PureShot technology and applied it to the X5. Even before the X5 was launched, Insta360 optimized low-light shooting with PureShot technology and applied it to the Ace Pro 2. Overall, the Insta360's night shooting effect and the stability of the application make it more comfortable to use.

Advantages of DJI Osmo 360

Lighter than X5

While the X5 is easier to maneuver because of its shape, the Osmo360's lightweight and sleek design is also a clear advantage. The vertical shape of the X5 makes it easier to hold for everyday travel, while the square and lightweight design of the Osmo360 makes it easier to attach to a helmet. Like the Osmo Action 5 Pro, DJI is popular among extreme sports enthusiasts.Users' Welcome The

Quick Start

The X5's sliding action is smoother and more comfortable, but the Osmo360's lightning-quick startup is also a big draw - it starts in 0 seconds. Or more specifically, it starts in -0.1 seconds.

High Spec 8K50fps

Anyway, the high specification of Osmo360 is really amazing. The default is 8K shooting, and it supports 50fps and HDR, which puts a lot of pressure on the camera, but it works stably without worrying about overheating, and the battery life is pretty good too. If only its apps and computer software could be a bit more stable, it would be perfect!

Suitable for selfies

The image quality of X5 is more suitable for landscape photography, while the low contrast of Osmo360 is more suitable for selfies. I think these two cameras have different features to appeal to their respective user bases.

Battery life and memory

Another advantage of the Osmo360 is its long battery life. Even though it only has a capacity of 1950mAh, it's enough to last for almost two hours of shooting. It's not only compatible with SD cards, but it also has built-in memory, so even with a long battery life, you're unlikely to give up shooting due to SD card capacity, which is a good thing.

10 Bit for greater editing flexibility

I mentioned the HDR color and noise issue, but for those who need post-production, DJI may be a better choice, Osmo360 supports 10-bit and Log format shooting in Pro mode, which retains more color and brightness information, and allows more post-production freedom. I'm currently learning DaVinci Resolve, and I hope to get a good handle on the Osmo360 material (laughs).

Which panoramic camera to get?

Recommended Users for Insta360 X5

X5 is very stable in terms of camera operation, application programs and software apps. HDR can be turned on and off freely, and AI can also adjust the light intelligently. No matter what the situation is, you can easily take the best pictures with the panoramic camera without any obstacles.

Even better, the X5's night shooting performance is excellent, allowing you to capture quality images from morning to night with just a few simple settings. From these perspectives, the Insta360 X5 is solidly built and ideal for novice 360° and sports cameras.

X5 is the best panoramic camera for beginners.
